Message 5: The Revelation of Jesus Protection

Series: Apocalypse Now… And Again – City Church of Chattanooga, Chattanooga, TN

Revelation 7:1-17, After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree. Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal of the living God. He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea: “Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.” Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel. From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed, from the tribe of Reuben 12,000, from the tribe of Gad 12,000, from the tribe of Asher 12,000, from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000, from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000, from the tribe of Simeon 12,000, from the tribe of Levi 12,000, from the tribe of Issachar 12,000, from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000, from the tribe of Joseph 12,000, from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000. After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!” Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes–who are they, and where did they come from?” I answered, “Sir, you know.” And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore, “they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them.
Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” The last verse of Revelation 6 asks a question—“The great day of their wrath has come and who can stand?” Chapter 7 is the answer to this question. In chapter 7, there is a sudden and unexpected interruption to the drama. Something is about to happen. Jesus wants to encourage his followers and to assure them of their safety during the day of God’s wrath.

THE PROMISE OF THE RETURN OF JESUS

The world has not seen the last of Jesus! Christ’s return is mentioned 180 times in the New Testament. One in every 25 verses makes reference to this future event on God’s calendar. It is a personal promise from Jesus himself.
John 14:1-3, Do not let your hearts be troubled…I am going to prepare a place for you, and if I go…I will come back and take you with me so that you may be where I am.
Revelation 22:12, Behold I am coming soon! It is a proclaimed promised by the angels of Heaven.
Acts 1:11, This same Jesus who has been taken from you into heaven will come back in the same way you have seen him go away. It an anticipated promise by the first followers of Jesus.
Paul: We wait for the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. (Titus 2:11)
John: When he appears we shall be like him for we shall see him as he is. (1 John 3:2)
Peter: When Christ appears, you will receive a crown of glory that will never fade away. (1 Peter 4:4)
James: Be patient and stand firm because the Lord’s coming is near. (James 5:7)

THE PROTECTION FROM THE WRATH OF GOD

Rev. 7 could be called the “signed, sealed, and delivered.” Judgment is halted until some are sealed. This sealing implies:
Possession
Preservation
Protection
Both Jewish and Gentile followers of Christ are included. Protection from God’s wrath is a divine pattern (Noah, Lot, Israelites in Egypt) Protection from God’s wrath is a divine promise.
Luke 21:34-35, For that day will come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth…Pray that you will be able to escape all that is about to happen.
Revelation 3:10, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth.
2 Peter 2:9, The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.
1 Thessalonians 5:9, But God did not appoint us to suffer wrath, but to receive salvation (deliverance, to be rescued) through our Lord Jesus. As followers of Jesus, we are looking for the appearing of Christ not the Anti-Christ.

THE PROBABILITY OF A RAPTURE

The Greek word for this concept is harpazo, It means to “seize suddenly.” (John 10:12)
It means to “transport to another place.” (Acts 8:39Cor. 12:2-4)
It means to “be rescued from imminent peril.” (Acts 23:10)  This is the comfort and encouragement for believers.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-18, For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a loud command…and the dead in Christ shall rise first. After that, we who are sill alive and left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord. And we will be with the Lord forever.

THE PREPARATION THROUGH THE BLOOD

There is only one way to be assured of Jesus’ protection:
YOU MUST BE WASHED FROM YOUR SINS BY THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB.
It will be worth it all when we see Jesus!
