God’s Cure For Loneliness

Loneliness is an emotional epidemic in today’s world. Millions of people suffer from this infirmity of spirit and yet have no idea of how to overcome loneliness. There is no human condition so acute or so universal as loneliness.

Erich Fromme said: “The deepest need of man is the need to overcome his separateness, to leave the prison of his aloneness.”

Dr. Paul Tournier called loneliness the most devastating malady of the age.

Mother Teresa said: “The most terrible poverty is loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted.”

It is estimated that nearly one forth of Americans experience regular levels of isolation and loneliness. In fact, of the millions of Americans who ate dinner last night over 20 percent of them ate alone.

Most of us during our lifetime experience moments of extreme aloneness but what I am talking about is much more than being by yourself or away from people for a season. It is the deep emotion that you are alone in the world. There can be little doubt that many of the people who will watch this program around the world are lonely. Loneliness eats away at your heart like a deep unspoken cancer until it consumes you.

Today, I want to talk about the causes, consequences and cure for loneliness.

I. Causes

Loneliness is not biased. It attacks young and old, women and men and people from every culture in the world. From the aging grandparent isolated in a nursing home. To the young middle school student who struggles with acceptance loneliness pervades every society. Loneliness also comes at us at unique moments. It is possible to feel lonely in a crowd or after a time of being alone. Faith Baldwin said: “Loneliness doesn’t happen just on dark days, It can pierce you like a knife on a spring morning or a golden summer afternoon, no matter where you are or what you are doing.” But why? What causes this overwhelming feeling this emotion of dejection and rejection called loneliness? There are many causes for loneliness which have not been caused by the individual who is lonely but for a moment I want to focus on two causes for loneliness that can be avoided and happen because of an individuals actions.

A. Selfishness

Gaston Foote said: “Loneliness is not a matter of isolation but insulation. Lonely people build walls around themselves and then complain of their

loneliness. If we are in love with no one but ourselves, we soon find ourselves hating ourselves.” Abraham Ibn Esra: “There is none more lonely than the man who loves only himself.” “Loneliness is more of an attitude than a circumstance; more self-inflicted than outwardly caused.” —Quote When we live for ourselves others are usually repelled from us. They simply don’t want to be around us. Many times in life we feel that we can make it on our own. But, this is simply not true. We need other people. (Romans 14:7) “For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.” When we isolate ourselves from others we isolate ourselves from the very people, which could help us, overcome our loneliness.

B. Sin

When we sin we are separated from God and lose fellowship with Him. Man was not made to live without the presence of God and so this in itself causes us to feel alone. When Jesus was on the cross he felt the horrible pain of loneliness because of sin. As the sins of the world were weighing down on him. As he bore our sorrow and our grief and became sin for us. For a moment he experienced the separation sin causes in our life and cried… “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” His disciples had fled, the crowds were gone, the hosannas had dissipated, and now the sins of the world had separated him from the father’s fellowship for a moment. In the Old Testament when a person contracted leprosy they were expelled from the community and had to live separately. The pain and reproach of their disease was compounded by their isolation. Sin is like leprosy in a spiritual sense. It separates us from the fellowship of God’s people. Condemnation, guilt, and a deep sense of aloneness accompany our failures. Atheist Madelynn Murray O’Hare–the person whose lawsuit removed mandated prayer from the United States public schools has been missing for years. She owes $250,000.00 in back taxes to the IRS. So, recently her dairies were sold to pay her debts. She talks about a number of things in them including her material desires. She states, I want money and power and I am going to get it. She has also writes about her atheistic cause and it’s affect on her life. She stated: “I think atheism is done for this time. I have failed in marriage, motherhood, and as a politician.” Within these private reflections of a woman who fought such a public battle against God we see a person who has a heart crying in despair. At least six times in her dairies it is written: ‘Somebody, somewhere, love me.”

A life of selfishness and sin lead to inner loneliness.

II. Consequences

There are a number of ill consequences, which take place because of loneliness. They include: withdrawal, paranoia, low self-esteem, depression, and even physical illness. The Harvard Medical School Mental Health Letter stated:

“Bereaved and depressed persons are often lonely, and the social support that relieves loneliness is often thought to prevent stress-induced disease. Research has now shown that loneliness can impair the immune system when it is combined with stress. “ In many people their loneliness can cause despair. David was a man who experienced extreme loneliness and despair. This was not caused by David’s own selfishness nor by sin but rather by a set of circumstances in which he found himself. He was running from Saul and felt all alone. Listen to these statements: (Psalms 142:4 NIV) “Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life.” (Psalms 31:11 NIV) “Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors; I am a dread to my friends-those who see me on the street flee from me. I am forgotten by them as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery. Maybe that is how you feel today. Like no one cares. You feel vulnerable, alone in the world and without a refuge. Like you are a piece of broken pottery. Don’t despair I believe that there is hope for you.

III. Cures

God does not want us to be lonely. The very first thing that God saw in all of his creation, which was not good, was that man was alone. Even God says: It is not good for man to be alone. Thus, God created woman and gave Adam companionship. Marriage and family are meant to provide companionship. Amazingly, some people are lonelier in their marriage than out. This should not be. God also created the church so that we could be in fellowship with other believers. In this fellowship we can enjoy a communion that helps not to feel alone. Laughter–which does good like a medicine–assists in healing the wounds of the world. Friendships are also God’s design for us to assist us in not feeling alone. (Proverbs 18:24) “A man that hath friends must show himself friendly.” One of the cures for loneliness is to get involved in the lives, joys, and pain of others. As you do this you can overcome your isolation. Family, church, camaraderie, laughter, and fellowship—-all of these help us not to feel alone. But, greater than all of this is God’s greatest cure for our loneliness, which is His love. God loves us and he is with us. (Matthew 28:20) “…And, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Hebrews 13:5-6) “… For he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that We may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”

(Proverbs 18:24) “…and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.”

Jesus wants to be your eternal friend that stays closer than a brother to you. Comforting your heart, encouraging your spirit and lifting you up. You may be alone–but you do not have to be lonely. It is said of Abraham that he was the friend of God. When you are serving the Lord you are God’s friend and thus you are never alone. Jesus is someone you can talk to. Tell your troubles to. He will comfort you, encourage you, and care for you in every way as you serve him. So, if you are suffering from loneliness—don’t despair God has a cure–His name is Jesus.

Loneliness is an emotional epidemic in today’s world. Millions of people suffer from this infirmity of spirit and yet have no idea of how to overcome loneliness. There is no human condition so acute or so universal as loneliness.

Surviving Sodom

For the last forty years the sexual morality of the western world has incurred tremendous change and extreme decline. The results of this sexual revolution have been disastrous.

In 1960 to 1990 the marriage rate per 1000 unmarried women went from 73.5 percent to

54.2 percent. The divorce rate rose from 9.2 percent to 20.9 percent. Cohabitation increased by over 600 percent.

We live in a world where promiscuity is promoted and perversion is paraded in every media form available. From the magazine rack to the sports track and from the television screen to the office scene—sexual messages are constantly bombarding our society.

The homosexual community has come out of the closet. Pornography has grown to one of the most lucrative industries in the world. The AIDS epidemic threatens the stability of many third world countries. Politician and preacher alike have had their once secret sexual failures proclaimed from the housetop.

In many ways the world could be said to be sexually insane. This message is about obtaining and maintaining your sexual sanity in an insane world.

God’s Word addresses every area of our lives and although it is uncomfortable and awkward for many of us to discuss, the Bible addresses sexuality in both the Old and New Testament.

First of all, the human sexual drive was God’s creation and God’s idea. Adam and Eve experienced this desire and were one flesh before the fall of man. God designed sexual desire for procreation and for fulfillment and union in marriage.

God’s Word is clear that sex is to be reserved for proper marriage and when taken outside of this context it violates God’s law.

There are several specific prohibitions and boundaries for human sexuality given to us in the law of God.

   1. Adultery is Forbidden “Thou shalt not commit adultery”. (Leviticus 18:20) “Moreover thou shall not lie carnally with they neighbor’s wife, to defile thyself with her.”
   2. Homosexuality is Forbidden (Leviticus 18:22) “Thou shalt not lie with man kind, as with womankind: it is an abomination.”
   3. Bestiality is Forbidden–Sex with an animal (Leviticus 18:23) “Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion.”
   4. Harlotry and Fornication is Forbidden—Prostitution and Pre-marital sex (Leviticus 19:29) “Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness.”
   5. Incest is Forbidden (Leviticus 18:6) “None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.”

While sex outside of marriage is forbidden, there are other passages that lead us to believe that sexuality within marriage is to be a celebration such as the Song of Solomon as well as a number of passages in the New Testament.

One of the starkest passages in scripture concerning sexuality and judgment against sexual sin is found in Genesis 18 and 19. It is the story of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and specifically it is the account of God’s judgment on Sodom and the rescue of Lot. Lot chose to live in Sodom because it was a prosperous area. But, it was also a wicked area.

(Genesis 13:13) “But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.”

Four things concerning this account.

A. Sodom’s Sins

It appears that Sodom followed the path many great societies have taken—the path from prosperity to perversion. (Ezekiel 16:49-50) “Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.” Pride, prosperity and laziness—(a deterioration of the work force). Disregard for the poor. Abominations. The name Sodom has become synonymous with sexual perversion. Why? (Genesis 19:4-5) “But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them.” Angels are visiting Sodom to destroy the city and observe how many righteous are there according to God’s promise to Abraham. The men of Sodom want to have sexual relations with them. Lot offers his two daughters instead. Obviously part of the sin of Sodom was the sexual perversion that was taking place there. (Jude 1:7 NIV) “In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.” How does this happen? The path to perversion is recorded in Romans 1. From pride to ignoring God to experimenting to decline in morals to sexual addiction to all sorts of evil. Sexual perversion opens the door to all kinds of other sin.

B. God’s Sentence

God’s sentence for Sodom was that it would be destroyed. The wages of sin is death. Most scholars believe that Sodom and Gomorrah are located at the southern end of the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is the lowest place on earth and the most lifeless body of water on earth. It is filled with salt. (Luke 17:28-29) “Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.” God used fire and brimstone from heaven to destroy Sodom. Brimstone is usually found near active volcanoes. A large amount was found in the Dead Sea area. Brimstone is a molten sulfuric salt that covered these cities. Sexual sin brings about a deep, slow death. (Matthew 11:23-24) “And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, Thou shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the Day of Judgment, than for thee.” Capernaum is now only a ruin of what was once a great city. The bottom line is that God is still a God of judgment and will judge perversion, pride, and vice.

C. Lot’s Situation

Lot’s Situation (2 Peter 2:6-8 NIV) “If he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard). Lot was vexed as the King James version reads—distressed. However, Lot was also willing to use Sodom to further his personal success. He was vexed but not victorious, troubled but not triumphant. His willingness to linger in Sodom put his family and testimony in danger. The angels finally, physically forced Lot to remove himself from Sodom before judgment came. Lot’s life was self-absorbed. Leaving Sodom would cause him to loose his gate position and his place in society. Lot lingered when he should have ran. His wife looked behind her and became a pillar of salt.

D. Perversion’s Stain

Though Lot was saved, his family was stained from their Sodom experience. Lot’s daughters continued the abominations of Sodom by getting their father drunk and sleeping with him. They both became pregnant and had offspring, which would form two long-term enemy nations of Israel. The Ammonites and the Moabites. Both of these nations became nations of pride, idolatry, fornication, and perversion. They stood in the way of Israel possessing the Promised Land. Though Lot survived Sodom his life was forever tainted by it. In the valley stood the brittle remains of his judged wife. In Zoar was heard the cry of his incestual grandchildren. His family was torn apart by the influence of Sodom.

Today, in a world that has lost it’s sexual sanity, where sexual perversion is rampant and promiscuity is prominent, God commands us to run for the hills. Run to Christ. Run from the valley of death. Run from the desolation of empty, perverted sexual expression. Run from the zombified condition of those consumed by confusion.

How do we respond? Agree with God’s law. Save sex for marriage. Avoid abominations. Ask for a daily cleansing. The stain must be purged. Run for the heights of Christian experience. Run for the high commitments, the high ground of integrity, the heights of fellowship, worship and praise. Run for you life. Only by God’s mercy and your decisive obedient action can you survive Sodom.

For the last forty years the sexual morality of the western world has incurred tremendous change and extreme decline. The results of this sexual revolution have been disastrous.

Why the Bible?

The Bible is alive. This is a special book, but why? What is so special about the Bible? Why did God want us to have a book and to have in writing the things he has said to us? We are going to examine these questions today in this sermon called Why the Bible?
The Bible is the most treasured and revered book in the world. I have personally watched people from China to Russia weep at receiving a copy of the word of God. They have treated it as a rare treasure to their life. And, a rare treasure it is.

The Bible contains the…
mind of God
state of man
way of salvation
doom of sinners
happiness of believers
Light to direct you
Comfort to cheer you.
The Bible is…
The traveler’s map
The pilgrim’s staff
The pilot’s compass
The soldier’s sword
The Christian’s charter
A mine of wealth
A paradise of glory
A river of pleasure
Its doctrines are holy
Its precepts are binding
Its histories are true
Its decisions are immutable
Christ is its grand subject
Our good its design
The glory of God its end.
Read it to be wise 2
Believe it to be safe
Practice it to be holy.
Read it slowly, frequently, prayer-fully.
The Bible should…
Fill the memory
Rule the heart
Guide the feet
It is given you in life
Will be opened at the judgment,
And be remembered forever.
It involves the highest responsibility
Will reward the greatest labor
and condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.
The Bible is the Word of God.
Composed by authors hundreds of years apart. From different locations in the world from different vocations and socio-economic backgrounds these authors come into an agreement that would be impossible except for the aid of the supernatural.
John Alexander said:
“The Bible is the infallible revelation of the infallible God—which means that it is entirely trustworthy and reliable. Our attitude toward scripture is desperately
important.”
George Washington said:
“It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.
John Quincy Adams said:
“So great is my veneration of the Bible that the earlier my children begin to read it, the more confident will be my hope that they will prove useful citizens of their country and respectable members of society.”
Abraham Lincoln said:
“I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the savior of the World is communicated to us through this book.”
Horace Greeley said: 3
“It is impossible to mentally or socially enslave a Bible-reading people. The principles of the Bible are the groundwork of human freedom.”
Charles Dickens said:
“The New Testament is the very best book that ever was or ever will be known in the world.”
Walter F. Burke who was General Manager of project Mercury and Gemini said: “I get from the Bible what I cannot get from Science–the really important things of life.”
But what is it about the Bible that makes so many people regard it so very highly?

I. It Endures

The Bible has demonstrated the ability to endure. Governments have changed. Seasons have come and gone. Political thought in the world has shifted. The entire global picture has endured great upheaval. World leaders, great philosophers, very good men and very bad men have come and gone but the Bible has continued on. It has endured like an impenetrable fortress. No other book has been so attacked, so maligned, so hated and so misused and yet, it has endured. (1 Peter 1:24-25 NIV) “For all men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever.” (Matthew 24:35) “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” In a transient,
rapidly changing world we can rest on the Bible for it will remain and endure.

II. It is Life-Giving

This book is alive. The Bible is the inspired Word of God. (2 Timothy 3:16) All scripture is given by inspiration of God…” This word inspiration comes from the Greek word, which means to breath. Thus the entire Bible is given by the breath of
God. God’s life through the Holy Spirit fills the Bible. This is no ordinary book. (2 Peter 1:21 NIV) “For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit moved on men to speak the Word of God. Jesus said: (John 6:63) “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” The Bible is a living book. Martin Luther said: “The Bible is
alive, it speaks to me, it has feet, it runs after me. It has hands, it lays hold of me.” The Bible is unlike any other book I have ever read. Other books are complete after one or two readings but the Bible continues to speak in new and unique ways to
my heart each time I study it. It is an inexhaustible volume, which has no end. Because the Holy Spirit served as the breath of God by which the Bible was written it takes the same Holy Spirit to understand the word of God. Many people cannot understand the Bible because the relationship to the author is negligent or distant. A close relationshipwith the Lord is required if we are to understand scripture. God’s word lives to produce faith within us. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. When God’s word like seed is planted in our heart it produces a life of faith in the author of the
Word—-God himself. The Bible is unique because it endures, it is life giving—a living book and it is life changing.

III. It is Life-Changing

The Bible not only has the ability to inspire but it has the ability to change a person’s life. Diligent study of scripture combined with prayer will change a person’s outlook and behavior in life. Within the Bible are the great truths of Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection. If these truths are believed God teaches us that we can be saved. The Bible is more than a lasting literary piece, or an inspirational read to enrich our lives it is the Word of God to us. The Bible is meant to change our life and God will judge each of us by whether we have obeyed his words or not. At the judgment at the end of the world the books will be opened which means that the books of scripture will be opened to show the lost which of God’s laws they have transgressed.

(James 1:22-24) “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any
be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.” God’s Word is meant to be obeyed and it will change our life if we will allow it to.

(Hebrews 4:12 NIV) “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” The Word of God is
said to be like a two-edged sword, able to pierce our thoughts and the intent of our heart. The Word of God is able to cut to the marrow of our life. Our bone marrow lies deep within our bones. It is in the marrow that the red blood cells; our very life source is produced. People every day in America receive bone marrow transplants to cause the bone marrow to produce cancer free cells and fight against the cancer in our life. God sends His Word to heal us from the inside out, from the marrow outward so that we can be made whole. This medicine of the Word does not always feel good to us. Many people don’t like the Bible because they don’t like what it says about their condition. Mark Twain once said: “Most people are bothered by those passages of scripture which they cannot understand, but as for me, I have always noticed that the passages in Scripture which trouble me most are those which I do understand.”

When God’s Word is clear about our condition we must change according to what the Bible reveals. If the Word is so unique—it endures, it is life giving and life changing then what should be our attitude toward it.

Our Attitude Toward The Bible

A. We Should Read IT!

The Library of Congress recently conducted a survey, which asked, “What book has most influenced your life?” The Bible landed in the number one position. Yet, during the typical week only 45 percent of American Christians read the Bible. Of the 45 percent, just 12 percent claim to read God’s Word daily. Fifty-five percent don’t even bother to open it once a week! It only takes an estimated 70 hours to read the Bible in its entirety. This is a minuscule investment in light of the fact that you will be judged throughout eternity by what it says. One writer said: “Read it through, pray it in, work it out, note it down, and pass it on.”

B. We Should Heed IT!

The Bible is to be obeyed. God wants to write his Words on the tables of you heart. (Psalms 119:11) “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

C. We Should Need IT!

Why the Bible? God knew we needed the Bible. He knew that we needed a permanent, enduring, unchanging record of His words to us. He knew we needed words that could generate life in a dead world and he knew that we needed His word to change us, cleanse us and conform us to His image. We should long for the Bible–it is the book we need. (Psalms 119:131) “I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments.” John Wesley wrote: “I am a creature of a day, passing through life as an arrow through the air. I am a spirit, coming from God, and returning to God; just hovering over the great gulf; a few months hence I am no more seen; I drop into an unchangeable eternity! I want to know one thing—the way to
heaven…God Himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that Book! At any price, give me the book of God!”

Why the Bible? We needed it!

The Bible is alive. This is a special book, but why? Why did God want us to have a book and to have in writing the things he has said to us? We are going to examine these questions today in this sermon called Why the Bible?
